Sleep Apnea Therapy

What is Sleep Apnea?

During sleep, particularly in the deeper stages like REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, the muscles in the throat naturally relax. This relaxation can cause the airway to narrow. Sleep apnea is a disorder where this narrowing or collapse of the airway leads to interruptions in breathing, stopping the airflow to the lungs for several seconds or longer. These interruptions, known as apneas, last at least 10 seconds and can occur repeatedly throughout the night.

Apneas may happen multiple times an hour, with each pause varying in length from just a few seconds to a few minutes. These breathing interruptions can significantly disrupt sleep, causing frequent shifts from deep sleep to lighter stages of sleep, known as arousals. These disruptions prevent the body from reaching and maintaining the restorative, deep sleep needed for overall health and well-being.

Both CPAP and Bilevel machines provide the same settings and set up instructions, the only difference is the type of airway pressure produced:

  • CPAP machines provide you with a constant level of positive airway pressure during inhalation and exhalation

  • Bilevel machines deliver two different levels of positive airway pressure (one during inhalation, and a lower pressure during exhalation)

CPAP devices come in a variety of machines with several different types and sizes of masks, but they all work together to deliver the mild supplementary airway pressure that makes sleep therapy effective.
